Outdoors Activity Instructor

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Providing a program of activities for a wide range of clients ensuring that all remain safe whilst enjoying their time at the centre.

Typical day

A typical day begins at 8am when we arrive at work, eat breakfast and prepare kit for the day. At 8:30 there is a morning meeting where we discuss what's happening in the day and ensure that we all know what activities we are up to. We meet the groups at 8:45 and after ensuring all their rooms are tidy we will begin activities. These typically last till lunchtime and include climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, high ropes, archery, team building etc. After a half hour lunch break activities begin again for the afternoon. We wrap up our courses at about 4:45pm, and clear away all of the equipment. On two days of the week we are required to do an evening duty which lasts until 9pm. This involves supervising dinner at 5:30pm and running an evening activity for the groups. If the group finishes early you work in the bike shed to repair the fleet of bikes until 9pm.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I love to see kids achieve things that they didn't think was possible and the self confidence that they gain through this.

Challenging aspects

Maintaining cheerful and enthusiastic when you are tired and the weather is awful; but a bad day in the outdoors is still better than a good day in the office!

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I spent a lot of my spare time at university caving, climbing and biking; so I thought I'd prefer to do a job which I love rather than being tied to a desk.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

From university I gained a lot of experience in climbing, caving and biking so I use all of this. I also use time management and the work ethic I learnt at university

Training I receive as part of my job

In my first year I received training in all aspects of the job, as well as training and assessment in National Governing Bodies in climbing, caving, mountain biking and paddling. This year I will receive further training in hillwalking, canoeing, mountain biking and caving.
