Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

HR graduate on a rotational placement, with placements to be undertaken in London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Typical day

My current placement is very analytical, studying volumes of queries that come into the HR help desk and analysing these to see where we can be proactive and make positive changes that will reduce these query volumes.

My next placement will focus more on recruitment and headhunting but the programme is very wide and there is a chance to cover almost any aspect of HR.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I really enjoy how each day can be different and how I'm given the opportunity to try out all the different areas of HR.

It was something that was totally new to me so a great chance to try out areas before committing to a full time role there.

Challenging aspects

It's been a huge learning curve - from understanding the different acronyms and business lingo to learning about the different divisions and how they interact - it's been a lot to take on and can feel slightly overwhelming when you first arise.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

It was a way of using my degree (there can be a lot of law involved in certain areas of HR - especially employment law), whilst not going into the legal profession.

I wanted a job that would challenge me but that also gave me the chance to build on the skills that I had already started developing at University.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Communication is key - HR contact a lot of different employees within the bank so it's important to have them in mind and make sure that you contact them in the right tone and manner.

Training I receive as part of my job

We had a week long induction and there are lots of graduate learning days and online training, as well as a lot of on the job training from placement to placement.

We'll also be studying for our CIPD qualifications soon!

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'm hoping to complete the first stages of my CIPD and roll of the graduate programme and into a permanent position within the bank.

I'm not sure exactly where I want to be but there's a lot of support to help me make that decision so I'm not worried about that just yet.

Focus on giving evidence in your applications - don't just say that you have a skill, say how you gained it and how you developed it.
