About the job

Main responsibilities

As I work in a number of different areas I have many different roles. I work in a CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) where I assess and treat children, I run my own clinic privately (different in Australia) and work with the Courts. I also sit on a government panel and am involved in a college committee.

Typical day

There is no typical day as I have so many different jobs. I might fly interstate - I provide a fly in/ fly out psychiatric service to Youth Justice in Tasmania, I might see a patient for a weekly psychotherapy at my rooms, I might go to Court to give expert evidence in the prosecution of a sexual offence trial or I might see a patient for a report where child neglect is suspected . then I go home and walk our dogs, talk to my kids and have dinner

What do I enjoy about my job?

Before entering medicine I completed an arts degree. I find that medico legal work combines my skills in medicine with the analytical and wring skills gained from my arts degree.
I enjoy the variety of things that I do - I am never bored and really love my work

Challenging aspects

My job can be emotionally draining and I often deal with very sad and distressing aspects of human life.I often work in areas of need where clinicians need to be quite creative in order to deliver services - however this is a challenge I relish.
as I do so many jobs things can get quite chaotic and it can be a challenge juggling all of my different roles and responsibilities, including family life

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I had always been interested in child forensic psychiatry and have really carved out my own niche, being one of only three practitioners doing this kind of specialist work in my state. I find the work both intellectually challenging and satisfying, and despite being very busy at times it has been a very flexible career in terms of family commitments.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Try a variety of things and don't feel afraid to change our plans. The career path that you identified in med school may not be the one that you enjoy most or suits you best

Other comments

When I talk to people of my age in other professions, I think that I am much happier in my job than other of my contemporaries.
