Michael -
Adjunct Music Faculty

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Create lectures and coursework for the music program. The classes I teach this semester are "music fundamentals", "music technology", and "Indian Music".

Typical day

I usually teach only a handful of classes each day. Typically I try to arrive about 10-15 minutes before the students to set up equipment and plan the lecture (or activity). When the class arrives we try to do engaging activities. After class, I stay to answer questions and help struggling students.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Mostly the mental stimulation - it's nice being challenged by other faculty, students, and self. Also I get to do music for a living, can't really beat that.

Challenging aspects

Same as the stuff that I enjoy - I like the challenge.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I am a firm believer in higher education and an arts advocate. This is the only thing I ever wanted to do.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

The qualifications I needed for the position was a MA or higher in music (thanks to University of Sheffield). The skills I use are too many to count, but obviously communication and expertise in taught subject matter are important.

Training I receive as part of my job

I've attended workshops for learning standards and been trained on administering tests. Beyond that, nothing really.
