About the job

Main responsibilities

(barrister)Court apearances (civil & criminal litigation), Company & commercial dealings.

Typical day

Attend court, meet with clients, complete documents for court filing

What do I enjoy about my job?

Cross examinging witnesses in court, especially when you "are closing the gates and ready for the kill."

Challenging aspects

When you are up against a good experiance barrister. Also when you travel to the other islands in the country to conduct cases.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Litigation keeps you on your feet all the time. When in court you think fast while on your feet.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

negotiation skills, speaking skills

Training I receive as part of my job

regular continuing legal education.

Brief history since leaving University

Since graduating stayed witht the public service for 12 months then moved to private practice since 2008.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Still running my practice & maybe in politics


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

If you study law because of the money, you will be dissappointed when you finish studies. Its not about the money alone, its about what you enjoy doing.
