Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Leading a small team of GIS consultants based within a client's offices. We assist geologists and geophysicists in using GIS software, managing data and creating and applying workflows for use in exploration and development of oil and gas.

Typical day

Spending time with clients showing how to use software; managing data; liaising with colleagues in IT department around infrastructure behind software; assisting junior colleagues in their work.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Enjoy applying technology to solve problems. Enjoy training people to help them in their work.

Challenging aspects

Working with and understanding back end IT systems. Balancing different priorities and variety of requests from different clients and ensuring work is complete on time and to standard.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Enjoy working with spatial data. The oil and gas industry is well paid.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

GIS skills learnt at university. Geography degree knowledge for applied geomorphology and physical geography

Training I receive as part of my job

Technical training on GIS and software. 'Soft' skills training, such as project management, client centred consulting.
