About the job

Main responsibilities

I work as a Construction Laywer in Dubai, dealing mainly with contentious matters.

Typical day

Helping Clients (Employers, Contractors, Sub-Contractors, Consultants) with substantial construction disputes in the UAE, but mainly Dubai. A typical day might see me: meeting Clients; meeting the other side and their lawyers; drafting Pleadings/Witness Statements etc; negotiating settlements of disputes; drafting and/or amending various construction agreements etc; appearing at the local common law Courts/Tribunal.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The responsibility; the challenge of investigating and progressing and/or settling disputes; working with Clients to obtain the best result possible for them.

Challenging aspects

The amount of work (which can be very substantial) and the pressures of completing tasks to - sometimes - very demanding deadlines.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Because it's challenging and every day and every dispute is different. Also, I like the area of construction law generally and the particular types of Clients one deals with.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Legal skills; negotiation skills; communication skills.

Training I receive as part of my job

Two years

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Do as much work experience as you can. Also, when drafting your CV try to include "stand out" or "different" attributes which might catch the eye of a prospective employer. Lots of CVs always say the same types of things and you can develop a "blind spot" to those CVs.
