Head of Geography

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Management of the Geography department including Geology and Leisure and Tourism
Teaching Geography from Year 7 to 13
Teaching Leisure and Tourism

Typical day

A typical day will start with my arrival at work and completing a number of administrative tasks such as preparing my resources for a days teaching.
I will then meet my tutor group for morning registration before a busy day of teaching. Lunch times usually involve GCSE students wanting to catch up with work or revise as well as running additional sessions after school.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Seeing the progress that young people make on a day to day basis. The moment when that student who has struggled with school makes progress because of their hard work and the support that you have given them.

Challenging aspects

Teaching is demanding on your time. There is a lot of work that will need completing away from work.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have always enjoyed working with young people and I have worked with a Brownie group for a number of years. Teaching seemed a natural progression of this.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Team working, organisation, time management, inter-personal skills. All aspects of my PGCE training were crucial in preparing me for the job ahead.

Training I receive as part of my job

As a teacher you are entitled to 25 hours of CPD per year. This may be directed by you or your school. My school has also supported me financially in completing my Masters.
