Health Improvement Practitioner - Maternity and Early Years

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am responsible for the coordination of two maternity and early years services. The first is called 'Why Weight? Mums' and the second is called 'HENRY'.

‘Why Weight? Mums’ is a weight management service for pregnant women and new Mothers with a BMI of 30+. This service addresses lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity, alongside the promotion of breastfeeding and a timely introduction onto complementary foods, in order to support the health of both Mother and baby.

‘HENRY’ is an 8 week course for parents with children under the age of 5, who wish to build their knowledge surrounding healthy living and the parenting skills that help to underpin and support healthy choices. ‘HENRY’ stands for ‘Health, Exercise and Nutrition for the Really Young’ and is a nationally recognised programme.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I really enjoy working with a family or an individual and being able to observe improvements and consequent health benefits over a set period of time.

In addition, I really enjoy working with a wide range of different people and feel fortunate to work with such a nice group of people.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

The area of health promotion and improvement appealed to me as it aims to address individuals poor lifestyle habits before they begin to pose a significant impact on their health and well-being. This not only aims to improve peoples quality and length of life, but also aims to reduce the financial implication for the health service.
