Head of KS3 Maths at seconondary school

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Previously Head of House, now second in Maths department. Teaching amongst lots of other things!!!

Typical day

Trainee teachers, mentoring, leading assemblies, administration, exam entries, organising events and trips, attending relevant courses, and teaching Maths!!

What do I enjoy about my job?

Ditto above!

Challenging aspects

Lack of quality trained Maths teachers in my area, so we are understaffed constantly.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Enjoy working with children and I love a challenge!

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Main ones are probably organisational skills, multi-tasking, communication, ICT (to an extent!), patience, enthusiasm, delegation and team working.

Brief history since leaving University

Always worked in secondary schools in Herts since leaving Sheffield Hallam in 2008.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Continuing to work in education. I love it!

My piece of advice to students

It's not difficult - there is a massive shortage of Maths teachers around. I would be happy to come and enthuse them about my job!!
