About the job

Main responsibilities

The delivery of Automatic Route Setting Systems for UK Railways. I lead a team of 3 data engineers who design, build and install complex data sets and software products onto sites in the UK.

Typical day

Configuration Management.
Technical leadership.
Problem Solving.
Project Reporting.
Testing and Integration.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The sense of accomplishment when a system is commissioned and working within the required timescales.

Challenging aspects

Delivering complex data in a tight timescales with inputs that change regularly.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have been working in the rail industry for 6 years and enjoy the unique environment and its challenges.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

My degree has allowed me the oversight to understand complex issues and the interactions between them.

I have an IRSE license.

Training I receive as part of my job

Experience has been my main training in this role.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Completed an IET accredited graduate training scheme at Invensys Rail Ltd.

Experience of working on the London Underground Victoria Line Upgrade Scheme specialising in modelling and simulations.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I would like to complete either and MBA or an engineering leadership qualification in the near future with the aim of being a technical leader in the rail industry in the future.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't limit your applications to training schemes. Many of the best engineers I have worked with have been in normal roles before migrating to a training scheme.

Keep your mind open about industries. I never thought I would work in rail.
