Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Manage the banking relationships for clients with turnover between £30m-£1bn and also responsible for business development.

Typical day

A typical day could consist of any number of the following:
Writing a credit paper to provide working capital facilities for a business.
Meeting with a new business propsect
Preparing a proposal for a prospective business client
Using risk ratings and pricing models to provide bespoke client solutions

What do I enjoy about my job?

The job is very varied, I enjoy learning about different types of businesses and meeting new people

The current economic environment and the competitive landscape.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

In all honesty I applied to a number of graduate programmes and corporate banking was the first successful application. Once I started I realised I loved it but it wasn't a conscious choice.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Certain aspects of my degree have helped - for example analysing audited accounts, understanding marketing, understanding leadership traits and also economics.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Worked at Barclays as a Relationship Support Manager in Corporate Banking (in London, June 2006-Aug2007)

Joined HSBC on the Corporate Banking graduate trainee programme (UK wide - Aug2007-Dec 2008)

Piloted an Analyst role and then was appointed as an Analyst in London (Jan 2009-Dec 2009)

Was promoted to a junior Corporate Banking Manager (Aberdeen, Jan 2010-June 2012)

Current role since July 2012

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Get as much work experience as you can, be it in the holidays, part time, internships etc.

Other comments

Don't be dissuaded if you are unsuccessful for job applications, keep trying and you will eventually succeed (always ask for feedback).
