Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Physiotherapy services provided to rehabilitate patients with injuries.

Typical day

Rest homes - working with the elderly, management of my clinic within the A+E department, seeing sports injuries.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I see different things every single day - injuries are always different.

Challenging aspects

Analysing different injuries and coming up with rehabilitation programmes

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I went travelling and changed what I wanted to do with my life so that it was more interactive with people and not stuck behind a desk. I also wanted to help people.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

My second degree - BSc Physiotherapy and my analytical skills.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Worked as a systems administrator for 1 year for Bedfordshire Police before becoming an intelligence analyst for 2 years. I took my PRINCE exams for Project management but left to go traveling instead as didn't want to get tied into a boring desk job.

Traveling throughout SE Asia, Australia and NZ for approx 8 months

BSc Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology (4 years).

Worked for one company over 4 clinics throughout central Auckland (Physio Rehab Group) whilst becoming a competitive swimming coach for Parnell Swimming Club and Northern Arena.

Currently contracting as a physiotherapist at the White Cross in Ponsonby, Auckland

Where do I see myself in the future?

Buying into the company I am currently working for. I will probably do a post grad in physiotherapy.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't be afraid to change career paths - I am already well into my second career and i am only 30!
