Management Graduate Trainee

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am enrolled on the two year rail operations graduate trainee programme, which covers everything from safety and staff management to incident management and corporate performance.

Typical day

One thing I have learned is that there are no typical days on the railway. Every day presents a new challenge, whether that be operationally or simply a new placement outside of my comfort zone. There is plenty of project work involved, which is something my degree really prepared me for.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The challenging and varied nature of my role is probably what I enjoy most. I also enjoy the continuous learning curve, which is allowing me to develop and help me to reach my potential.

Challenging aspects

There is so much to learn and time management takes on real importance, as deadlines can be challenging.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

The public transport sector have a huge role to play in tackling some of the key environmental issues that society faces. This job allows me to put my knowledge and experience gained from my degree into practical use in the real world.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Skills: Critical thinking, teamwork, communication, statistical knowledge, project management skills.

Knowledge: Weather/climate knowledge is proving useful in my role.

Training I receive as part of my job

Periodic training courses as part of the graduate group and also local courses on topics such as customer service.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Be prepared to take time out to work on reasons that prevent you getting a job and then try again. I was unsuccessful at the final stage when applying to FirstGroup first time round, but I spent over a year acting on their feedback and now have the job.
