Why do this course?

Applied for PhD advertised as part of a large interdisciplinary project (URSULA), based on my own varied background in research and community work, and interest in policy, participation and environmental concerns. Was EPSRC funded, but funding now expired.

Main responsibilities

Part-time research work, interviews, transcribing, analysis on a water industry project.

Brief history since leaving University

MA Women's Studies - University of York 2002

Work in the community sector (Woodthorpe Development Trust) - community development work, volunteer manager. 2002-04

Research work - various contracts at Sheffield Hallam University. 2004-08

PhD Town and Regional Planning, University of Sheffield. 2008 - present (including 1 year maternity leave)

Where do I see myself in the future?

Seeking an academic career once PhD complete.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

To get on with a PhD as early as possible, as it is essential to get on in an academic career.

Other comments

More support and advice about Research Council funding for PhDs and further study would be useful at undergraduate level, as it seems like a leap to go from undergraduate study to academic work.
