Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
Teaching KS3/4/5 Geography, KS3 Humanities, Assistant Head of Year 7-transition, in charge of Key Stage 3 Geography, Lead on Whole School Humanities and Literature programme. Responsible for initial teacher training within Geography.
I arrive at school at 7am and ensure lessons are organised for the day as my assistant head of year role means the day can change within minutes. I speak to parents/Carers/guardians and external agencies with relation to pupils I teach but also those who may need intervention. Once day is done at 15:10 I will run study sessions for key stages 4/5 and then work on planning and admin until 6 or 7 pm
Being in the classroom teaching or dealing with social issues amongst my year 7's
Time management is a massive challenge. 12 hour days in school are commonplace as I try to keep my home time separate from school. Also dealing with dept for education and Ofsted changes that impact everyday teaching
I love geography so I wanted to inspire others to study it further than KS3
I still trawl academic work to ensure my KS5 teaching is bang up to date
I now make sure any examination board conferences are attended
2000-2005 I was a self employed singer and also worked in a theatre
2005 fell into teaching assistant role with S Korean pupil and with two terms was training to teach on a GTP course at Newman University College Birmingham
2006-2008 teacher of geography at Alderbrook School Solihull
2008-2010 teacher of geography and sustainability coordinator at St Paul's School For Girls Birmingham
2010-present Teacher of Geography/Assistant head of year 7/second in dept/ literacy coordinator at Bishop Challoner Catholic College
Working my way up to assistant head (pastoral)
Spend time at university gaining experience so the transition is not a struggle due to lack of working experience. If thinking about teaching...get into schools and see what is involved before starting a PGCE
