Teacher of Geography/Assistant Head of Year/Second in Dept/Literacy Coordinator

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Teaching KS3/4/5 Geography, KS3 Humanities, Assistant Head of Year 7-transition, in charge of Key Stage 3 Geography, Lead on Whole School Humanities and Literature programme. Responsible for initial teacher training within Geography.

Typical day

I arrive at school at 7am and ensure lessons are organised for the day as my assistant head of year role means the day can change within minutes. I speak to parents/Carers/guardians and external agencies with relation to pupils I teach but also those who may need intervention. Once day is done at 15:10 I will run study sessions for key stages 4/5 and then work on planning and admin until 6 or 7 pm

What do I enjoy about my job?

Being in the classroom teaching or dealing with social issues amongst my year 7's

Challenging aspects

Time management is a massive challenge. 12 hour days in school are commonplace as I try to keep my home time separate from school. Also dealing with dept for education and Ofsted changes that impact everyday teaching

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I love geography so I wanted to inspire others to study it further than KS3

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I still trawl academic work to ensure my KS5 teaching is bang up to date

Training I receive as part of my job

I now make sure any examination board conferences are attended

Brief history since leaving University

2000-2005 I was a self employed singer and also worked in a theatre

2005 fell into teaching assistant role with S Korean pupil and with two terms was training to teach on a GTP course at Newman University College Birmingham

2006-2008 teacher of geography at Alderbrook School Solihull

2008-2010 teacher of geography and sustainability coordinator at St Paul's School For Girls Birmingham

2010-present Teacher of Geography/Assistant head of year 7/second in dept/ literacy coordinator at Bishop Challoner Catholic College

Where do I see myself in the future?

Working my way up to assistant head (pastoral)


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Spend time at university gaining experience so the transition is not a struggle due to lack of working experience. If thinking about teaching...get into schools and see what is involved before starting a PGCE
