Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am a Speech & Language Therapist working in secondary schools across Central London. My role involves providing universal, targeted and specialist services to the schools I work in.

Typical day

I am fortunate enough to work for 3 days in 1 secondary school which allows me to support the school to promote communication through whole school initiatives, classroom teaching as well as supporting students in groups and 1:1 settings. Much of my time is spent training staff on language and communication strategies which can increase engagement and attainment within the classroom.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Joint working with teachers and support staff. Supporting students to gain strategies to support themselves in the classroom and socially.

Challenging aspects

Time, there is never enough time!

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

My first job was within schools and I enjoy working within the education setting so have continued to do so. I chose to move to secondary schools because of my interest in this age group.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I have built on the basis of knowledge gained through my degree. I have also appreciated the skills of reflection that were taught through my degree.

Training I receive as part of my job

I am able to access a range of courses, both clinical and educational.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I started working in Central London in 2008 and have continued in the same service until this point. Last year I took a career break to go travelling for 5 months, which was a very welcome break! I also work part time as a Duke of Edinburgh instructor.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Being a SALT, a SENCo or a Teacher

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Having relevant experience outside of SALT. At university I did Sheffield Volunteering and ran Children's Project which gave me the greatest insight into children's lives and prepared me for work.
