Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Managing research projects, writing proposals and reports, recruitment of research teams, presenting results etc

Typical day

I could either be in the field collecting data for a project, or managing the project from the main office. Writing reports, training people, doing presentations and generally managing the research process.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I meet many different people on different levels, from CEOs and government ministers to HIV/AIDS patients in hospitals

Challenging aspects

It can be very demanding time wise. There are many deadlines and clients always want the highest quality of work in a short space of time.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

It is interesting - no day is ever the same.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Writing skills are very important as are general communication skills.

Training I receive as part of my job

Training is on the job, although they have an e-learning centre

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Keep trying and don't be afraid to volunteer for a while. Once you have the experience and make a good impression your chances of getting a job in the area of work you want, go up considerably.
