Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
Designing graphics to support education materials.
Creating content for secondary education materials such as GCSE Geography.
Commissioning external companies to deliver graphic designs.
Organising and administering content using programs like Microsoft Excel.
On a typical day I will review images supplied by our design company and write up feedback for the company. I will consult with colleagues and the design department within the BBC for guidance on the direction the graphics need to go. I will have meetings about the next steps for our team. There are often activities about the work within the wider department, for example often I will attend ideas sessions to input ideas about future projects for BBC Learning.
The most enjoyable aspect would be when I have a strong idea for a piece of content like a graphic and I successfully communicate this vision to the supplier and they are able to design a graphic which exceeds my initial idea and expectations. I enjoy working in a team where there are lots of bright people with excellent ideas as we inspire each other to improve what we do all the time.
It can be challenging because there is a lot of uncertainty about the future at the moment. Most people are on 6 month contracts so people are unsure about whether they have a future at the company. There are a lot of meetings and talking so if you just want to get on with things you might feel a bit slowed down by all the chat. Also, there is naturally quite a lot of bureaucracy which can be a bit confusing.
I like working towards creating a product that I know will improve someone's chances of achieving a better education. I wanted to work in a role in a company which is large and diverse so I know the future at the company will be interesting, varied and challenging. I also like the responsibility of working for a company like the BBC which where the demand is to create the most outstanding content.
The main skills are administrative skills like being good at planning and communicating about a project. It is important to have good people skills and being sensitive to who you need to talk to, and when, as there are lots of people involved. It is important to have good creative skills with the ability to communicate your ideas well in writing.
The main training is things like legal and editorial training around the sensitivities of publishing content for the BBC. I have also had training in the programming language HTML5
Sport journalist.
Project Manager for a communications company.
Communications Officer for the local City Council.
Volunteer film making and teaching in Africa.
I see myself gaining more influence in the future of online education content within the BBC or for an independent company. I don't need more qualifications, just experience.
Build up examples of work within the field you are interested in, even if it is unpaid or a part of your education.
