Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
Supervise offenders completing Community Order sentences.
I also volunteer as Panel member of Schools Admissions Appeals.
Supervising offenders for Community Payback projects. Ensuring that the offenders complete unpaid work which benefits the community. Teaching different skills (building, maintenance, decorating etc) in order for the offenders to complete their sentences whilst benefiting charitable organisations. Monitoring and recording offenders progress in conjunction with other agencies (e.g. Police, courts and social services).
Working directly with people.Teaching skills to people that could help them to gain employment and turn their lives around. Being a role model for further education. Learning about people from varying backgrounds and gaining an understanding of their social and economic difficulties.
Gaining the respect of offenders whilst displaying authority. Knowing the offences committed whilst treating everyone equally. Dealing with aggressive confrontation.
During my degree course I gained an insight into the various social, economical, and political elements that combine to explain some of the many reasons that lead to crime. This has made me far less judgemental of offenders regardless of the seriousness of their crimes.
Understanding that we are all different and that social circumstances and life chances play a part in who we become helps enormously with my job.
Child protection, scaffolding, first aid, aggression defusing, money management, and other ongoing training.
Offered a job with Office of National Statistics but declined in order to work for the Probation Trust
Trained and now sit on Notts County Council Schools Admissions Appeals Panels (voluntary) 2nd year
Still looking into teaching literacy to adults but prevented at the moment due government austerity measures.
Hopefully teaching adult literacy.
Apply with covering letter expressing an eagerness to work in that area. Always send covering letter regardless of application process.
Display the fact that your degree or course has benefited you and that it would in turn benefit the company you have applied to. Never too old to learn and eager to learn more are very desirable assets to employers.
