Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
- Interacting with game developers to support them making their games.
- Placing feature requests.
- Reproducing problems for detailed analysis.
My current role is quite close to technical support. I monitor the ticketing system answering queries / problems as best I can, and passing on feature requests and bug reports to the right teams.
Over time I will be able to move on to directly developing SDK and tools for the PlayStation systems.
Sending developers away satisfied, working with the PS3 PSVita and PS4 close up and underneath. Again, debugging developers games and helping them optimise.
I'm also looking forward to being able to attend the big game developer conferences (such as GDC, E3, maybe PAX)
Heisenbugs... the type of problem where someone says "this happens about 1 in every 20 times". Those are really hard to solve.
I'm a massive fan of computer games, so working in that industry is great!
I also get to focus on my favourite part of programming, which is is problem solving.
Programming, my MSc in Game Software Development, mathematical skills.
I get access to the documentation and standard training materials for PlayStation programming. There are a wide range of training courses available (Japanese is popular...) and I've had presentation skills training.
July 2010 - February 2011: Drew jobseekers allowance while trying to find work. Became very highly ranked playing Assassin's Creed online.
February 2011 - August 2011 Health & Safety Support Officer for River Stewardship Company (RSC) in Sheffield, on the Future Jobs Fund (FJF).
August 2011 - Went to Edinburgh Fringe Festival playing Mr. Freeze in a Batman Spoof.
September 2011 - September 2012: Continued at RSC for one day per week, not on FJF any more. Studied for an MSc. in Game Software Development at Sheffield Hallam. I graduated with distinction and the SCEE prize.
September 2012 - ongoing: Moved to London to work for SCEE. Still here. Planning to stick around for the foreseeable future.
I may consider trying to get a PhD alongside my work here.
Work hard and get a good looking portfolio that shows off your skills.
Approach companies directly, rather than through agencies. Make games (Flash, GameMaker), do experiments in code to see what you can do.
Have something flashy to show off as well.
