Teacher of Economics and Business Studies

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Teaching lessons.
Dealing with pastoral issues.
Planning and preparing lessons to appeal to a diverse range of students.

Typical day

Teaching around 20 lessons a week, as well as a heavy involvement with extra-curricular activities, in particular rugby and cricket.

Involved in leading the school online services - including virtual learning environments.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Engagement with students.
Constantly changing challenges and requirements.

Challenging aspects

No two days are the same, even very similar students in some ways can require completely different approaches in other respects.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Enjoyed helping people, but also wanted something that would be consistently challenging.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

My Economics degree was invaluable in gaining my job, particular as there is a shortage of Economics specialists nationwide. I also required a PGCE post-graduate qualification.

Training I receive as part of my job

Professional developing training as part of the NQT programme conducted externally with the local authority.
Regular whole staff training evenings introducing new procedures.

Brief history since leaving University

WRVS - Store Manager.
Oct 2010 - Apr 2011 running a small charity coffee store.

MillraceIT - Sales Administrator.
Working for a medium sized social enterprise in their sales department.

University of Brighton - PGCE Business Education.
Post-graduate study to gain QTS status, including gaining half of the credits required for an MEd.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Continuing to work in schools, aiming to progress up the management ladder. Within the next few years I hope to finish my MEd in Education Studies.

My piece of advice to students

Be prepared to consider any field; it is always essential to remember that large organisations will often re-assign you if they are happy with your work but feel that your skills are better suited to another department.
