Civil & Structural Engineer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

My main duties consist of concept development and facilities design and costing for oil field development. Plus, design, construction and project planning, pipeline sizing and design.

Typical day

Meetings with clients and contractors to ensure adherence to project scope and schedule. Liaise with operations teams to ensure optimum operability of facilities.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Although I work in the upstream end of the company, I provide services to our Gas & Power Company and our Exploratory and Production Company; this means I am always busy. There is always something fresh to learn at work, whilst going about my daily activities.

Challenging aspects

Being a Civil & Structural Engineer in the upstream Oil and Gas business is challenging; as the industry naturally gives preference to subsea, petroleum and Well Engineers who are already skilled in the area. My greatest challenge is learning and working at the same time. Most of my time is outside the office, spent catching up on industry - wide terminologies and philosophies which are new to me.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Having the opportunity to start my career in the engineering project office of the organisation, which is a robust department of the organisation, allows me to explore a lot of other business related activities. This will provide me with an insight into the business units requirements of engineers and allow me to gain more experienced and develop other skills within the Engineering Manager role.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Programming; Engineering Designs, Construction Management etc.

Training I receive as part of my job

On the job and classroom training.
