Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Strategic thinking;
Ensuring our business metrics are understood by the management of the business;
Planning the commercial & contractual engagement with clients;
Developing new service lines;
Running profit improvement programs.

Typical day

How are we trading over our 10 global offices? I need to check & frequently visit them.
Liaise with CEO on how we can help achieve his goals.
Solve the problems no one else can!
Consider risk issues & their mitigation.

What do I enjoy about my job?

It's intellectually challenging.
I have to stay up-to-date with the relevant legislation in 10 different jurisdictions - and this is increasing.
I make a difference.
I have intellectual freedom.
Making finance an added-value business function.

Challenging aspects

Jurisdictions - what works in the UK may not work in Japan, for example
The framework in which I operate is continually changing.
People - a frustration & a joy to work with.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

The challenges.
There are few jobs where you have to master so many skills.
Not constrained by the conventional image of being a "beancounter".

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Research - Chartered Accountancy training is rigorous & used every day.
Thinking like an Economist - it's more rigorous than you perhaps realise!

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Qualified as a chartered accountant with Arther Andersen in Leeds for 4 years.

K-Tel - a London-based client of Andersens as Financial Controller for 2 years

Alexon Group PLC as their Group Financial Controller for 4 years.

Self-employed business consultant, specialising in Corporate Recoveries for 20 years.

PTS Consulting Group PLC as Chief Financial Officer from 2005 - 2014, although assisted with their MBO in 1990 & worked part-time until taking up the post on a full-time basis.

Changed role to Chief Risk Officer after private equity investment in 2013.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'd like to get the company to a point whereby I can step away & leave it to my successor.
Perhaps a few years as an interim manager or academic, then retirement!
Spending more time on my motorbike/at my house in France.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Have a very clear idea about why they want to hire you - and make sure they understand it.
Don't give up.
Adapt your pitch if it doesn't gain traction.
