Graduate Project Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am currently on a well structured Project Management Graduate Scheme. This 18 month course aims to train us to 'Project Manager' level by the end.

The first 6 months involves a rotation around the business, gaining an understanding of the different divisions and how the company works. Following this, 12 months will be spent as a 'Project Co-ordinator', working on customer projects with responsibilities including project reports, monitoring project finances and arranging meetings.

After 12 months, providing the graduates have proven to be at the level required, then we will become Project Managers, taking on greater responsibility for the projects we work on.

What do I enjoy about my job?

One of the best things about working in project management- particularly at Computacenter- is the wide range of opportunities available. Each project is vastly different, in terms of what is being delivered, what industry your customer is from, where you are located etc. These differences keep the job exciting and fresh.

Challenging aspects

Learning how all the different departments work together and link is challenging at first. Being straight out of university, working in a global corporation is a huge step and takes some getting used to how it all fits together. But at the same time, it is also exciting to be part of such a large operation.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I was excited to work within the IT industry because despite no previous IT knowledge, it is a rapidly growing industry which is exciting to be a part of.

In terms of choosing project management, it is a job which has clear job satisfaction, through completing the project on time, on budget and to the customer's satisfaction.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

A 2.1 in any degree is required for this job; business or IT related degrees are not essential. In addition, a full UK Driving License is also required. Excellent numeracy and literacy skills are required.

Training I receive as part of my job

A huge effort is made into training new staff at Computacenter. Firstly, the scheme starts with a 6 month rotation around the business to gain an understanding of the business itself.

In addition, free courses are run by the company to improve personal areas of weakness, including presentation courses and Microsoft excel courses. Finally, as part of the programme, the graduates earn their PRINCE2 qualification.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I finished University in May/June 2016, and after enjoying the summer, started in my new role at the beginning of August.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I plan to keep working my way up at Computacenter. After finishing this scheme in 18 months, hopefully I will become a Project Manager, and then continue in this role, taking on new opportunities and challenges where possible.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

For job applications, rather than sending out the same CV to hundreds of employers, try to tailor your CV to the company you are applying for. Once you have an interview, be sure to do your research and know the company well, and be yourself; your personality is key to being successful in interviews/ assessment centres.
