Solicitor

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I specialise in all areas of family law. Whilst my post-qualification caseload has consisted mostly of complicated children (including international children cases) and domestic violence cases, I also have experience with assisting and managing complex divorce, medium and high net worth financial remedy proceedings, enforcement in family law and international family law. I have assisted cases where international jurisdiction has been a significant issue particularly in cases where parents wish to move abroad and take their children with them.

What do I enjoy about my job?

One of the most enjoyable elements of being a family lawyer is knowing that I am able to provide the help needed to those who are vulnerable and to provide assistance in helping them to move forward with their lives. For example it's rewarding to see when a client becomes more confident after getting through a divorce which is typically a distressing time for many.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I first graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2007, with a 2.1 Honours degree in LLB European, International and Comparative Law. As part of the degree, I spent time in Finland studying law at the University of Helsinki. Following completion of my LLB, I went on to earn my LPC at the university, graduating in 2008. Alongside my studies at the University of Sheffield, I regularly volunteered for the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services (CAFCASS) at a contact centre in Sheffield, assisting in supported contact between children and their non-resident parent or relative.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I joined Stowe Family Law LLP, in July 2008 as a trainee solicitor. I qualified as a Solicitor in family law in 2010 and remained with the firm as an associate solicitor based in the Harrogate office before moving to the Leeds office in 2013.

Other comments

I really enjoyed studying at the University of Sheffield. The atmosphere was fantastic and there was always something happening. The Students' Union is great and boasts an excellent social life with various clubs and activities to engage in.

I would definitely recommend studying in Sheffield. The staff are really friendly and the lecturers and tutors are of a very high standard. The cost of living is also reasonable.
