Key Skills
Communication
  • On PGCE developed and delivered English lessons to classes of up to 30 secondary school-aged students. This required adapting style of teaching to meet needs of individual students at various levels of attainment.
  • Presented on a range of topics throughout my university career, often to non-specialist audiences.
  • Worked with supervisors to engage in 1-1 conversations with parents and students, developing an understanding of managing expectations whilst understanding individual needs.
Creativity
  • Planned a wide range of activities during teaching practice to ensure engagement within lessons, allowing for all students needs to be met.
  • Ensured all attendees to cubs were engaged and enjoyed activities during the sessions. This required a good understanding of each of the pack’s interests to produce sessions and activities which would be interesting to all of them.
Leadership and Teamwork
  • Managed the outdoor pursuits team over the course of two summers at summer camp in America. This required developing a rota for staff and creation of an education program that played to each staff member's skillset to allow campers to gain the most experience during their time in camp.
  • Led the organisation of three society balls, working alongside other committee members to organise the team in booking venues, organising catering and ensuring the events were marketed effectively.
  • Quickly develop strong working relationships with colleagues, having worked in a number of environments where a cohesive team was essential.
Interpersonal
  • Collaborated with other students during my degree as part of the Theatre Society, writing and directing an original play resulting in a profit making production.
  • Established and maintained relationships with parents and children as part of the cub scouts to ensure all participants felt supported and engaged.
  • Supported cabins of up to 8 children during 6 week periods at summer camp, requiring an excellent rapport and understanding of individual needs.

  • Placements lasting 9 weeks in autumn term and 12 weeks in spring term.
  • Observed and taught students from age 11-18 in English.
  • Became competent in planning effective lessons that allowed engagement of all pupils through a mixture of different exercises to account for various attainment levels and learning styles.
  • Worked closely with SEN team at Sheffield High School to create a program of bespoke lessons to engage with students identified as having a SPLD. This has now been integrated into their regular programme and will continue next year.
Classroom Experience - Grange Hill, Lancaster

  • Two week classroom experience.
  • Observed teachers across the English department to gain a better understanding of the day to day experience of teachers.
  • Worked 1-1 with a number of students to embed learning form the classroom, this involved working through assigned work and breaking it down in to more understandable and achievable tasks.
  • Gained an excellent understanding of how teachers can differentiate to meet student’s needs and also an appreciation that interventions can make to individual learners.
Students Into Schools Programme - Brinsworth Academy, Sheffield

  • University placement programme involving one day a week in a school throughout the year.
  • Observed teaching in a number of different lessons.
  • Provided assistance during lessons to help the teacher, answering students questions, explaining tasks.
  • Developed and presented my own lesson at the end of the programme inline with the current topic of ‘Horror’, was given excellent feedback and all students were engaged and produced work.

Other Interests
Outdoor pursuits enthusiast and passionate about climbing. Continually taking on new challenges to learn new sports and further skills, current challenge being surfing. Experienced traveller, having spent a year abroad in Canada and summers in the USA. Most likely to be found wandering the Peak District or baking.
